OXYGEN SCAVENGER
SODIUM SULPHITE (Na₂SO₃) is a soluble sodium salt of sulfurous acid used as an oxygen scavenger in water based mud systems.

- It may also be used as an anti-oxidant to prevent polymer degradation.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT:
Oxygen scavenger: added continually until the residual sulphite (SO₃) concentration in the mud filtrate reaches or exceeds 300 mg/L. Thereafter, this residual is maintained with daily treatments in the order of 20 – 60 Kg, depending on the severity of the dissolved oxygen content in the drilling mud.

MIXING/HANDLING:
Sodium Sulphite readily decomposes. It is usually added at a concentration of 1 – 2 sacks to a barrel of water. After mixing, the blend is covered with a 10 – 15 cm blanket of diesel to minimize absorption of oxygen from the air and slowly pumped into the central stream of the mud with an injection pump.
