HYPERDRILL® AF 204RD is a high molecular weight, anionic polyacrylamide supplied as a dry, granular powder. When added to water-based drilling fluids, this specially processed polymer disperses rapidly, allowing hydration to occur without the formation of lumps or “fish eyes”. HYPERDRILL® AF 204RD is primarily recommended for use as a total flocculant in clear water and low-solids drilling. It is very effective in removing most solids from drilling fluids.
Clear Water Drilling: A 0.5% solution should be prepared prior to its addition to the system. This equates to ~ 1.0 kg in 200L of water. At normal drilling rates, 200L should be sufficient to last 3-4 hours. For this application, the polymer solution should be added continuously at the flowline while circulating the reserve pit. It is very important that the polymer solution is added at a point of turbulence to ensure proper mixing of the flocculant with the drilled solids.
Low-Solids Drilling: Very effective in removing all solids from drilling fluids, thereby reducing the mud weight. This allows for better rheology control and increased penetration rates with less bit wear. For this application, a 0.5% polymer solution is best added ahead of the shale shaker. The solution can be added continuously or intermittently in order to control native solids and/or bentonite content.
Application rates will vary from 1.5-3.0 kg/m³ depending on the solids loading. The addition of a very small amount can have a pronounced effect on the rheology of a drilling fluid.
