POTASH (KCl) or potassium chloride, is also known as Muriate of Potash. POTASH is commonly used in drilling applications to provide free potassium ions for inhibiting clay/shale swelling. POTASH is also used in fracturing and cementing operations.
K+ ions are depleted from the drilling fluid as absorbed onto the clay platelet. The rate of
depletion is dependent on the reactivity of the clay/shale.
10 kg/m³ KCl equates to ~5,200 mg/L K+.
30-50 kg/m³ (typically). More exact requirements may be determined by a shale hydration inhibition test.
