Barite

Bri-Chem Supply Ltd

Barite

BARITE is ground barium sulphate that meets API Specification 13A, Section 7. BARITE is used to increase the density of drilling fluids when required to control formation pressures. BARITE has a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and can be used to increase density in water and oil-based systems up to 2516 kg/m³.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • Increases mud density up to 2516 kg.m³ to : Control formation pressure Stabilize the borehole May be used as a plug for well control
  • Chemically inert

Additions of water and/or thinners may be required at higher densities (>2400 kg/m³). Approximately 105 X 40 kg bags will increase the system volume by 1m³.

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT

as required

Barite required (kg/m³) =     4200 (initial density (kg/m³) − desired density (kg/m³))
4200 − desired density (kg/m³)

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

Appearance: Beige-grey powder
Specific Gravity: 4.2 (minimum)
Solubility: Insoluble (water, oil)
pH: 7.0-9.5

MIXING/HANDLING:

Mix as rapidly as a jet mixer can handle, although small density increases are usually achieved with barite additions over a circulation. Refer to the SDS for specific handling requirements.
